OVERVIEW
Manterfly Youth Development offers two single-sex groups facilitated by trained staff. These programs are held on-site and are provided on a weekly basis to a group of six to ten youth of similar age and development. The sessions are facilitated by trained facilitators for a period of 1.5 to 2 hours. These meetings are held for ten weeks or more, depending on the needs of the participants.
The Council is a strengths-based group approach to promote boys' and young men's safe, strong and healthy passage through pre-teen and adolescent years. The Council meets a core developmental need in boys for strong, positive relationships. In this structured environment, boys and young men gain the opportunity to address masculine definitions and behaviors, build their capacities to find their innate value and create good lives, individually and collectively. The topics addressed in these sessions include dealing with competition, making decisions, becoming allies with girls and women, and self expression.
The Girls Circle provides adolescent girls with a program that addresses their needs by focusing on increasing connections, building empathic skills and developing resiliency. It aims to counteract social and interpersonal forces that impede girls’ growth and development. The participants express themselves through creative and focused activities such as role playing, drama, journaling, and poetry. Gender specific themes and topics are addressed including: trusting ourselves, friendships, body image, goals, sexuality, teen pregnancy prevention, drugs, alcohol, tobacco, competition, and decision-making.
