What is a Mentor?

A mentor is a caring adult who, along with parents, provides young people with support, counsel, friendship, reinforcement and positive models. Mentors are nurturing people, good listeners, and people who want to help young people bring out strengths that are already within.

Why Mentor?

Manterfly believes that all children have the potential to succeed in life and contribute to society. However, not all children get the support they need to thrive. Manterfly creates those one-on-one relationships between trained, caring adults and mentees in an environment that supports success in life.

Mentors must have a minimum of 1 hour per week (4 hourse per month) of face to face contact with mentee.  Mentors must commit to a minimum of one year of service and a minimum of in-person visits per month with the mentee.  While Mantefly only requires the minimum commitment, we hope that the relationship develops and that time allows for service well past the one year. All Mentors must go through a thorough screening and training process and Manterfly works with each mentor to assure a satisfactory match, and to provide flexibility to accommodate each mentors schedule.

Mentor requirements:

  • At least 21 years old and have completed high school or the equivalent
  • Ready to submit an application and two letters of reference
  • Willing to participate in an interview with staff
  • Can pass a criminal background check
  • Can participate in a four-hour mentor training
  • Willing to make a one-year commitment to a mentee
  • Must have own car and valid driver's license
  • Must be patience, nurturing, and have fun
  • Minimum of 1 hour per week or 4 hours per month with mentee
